SOSKIN from Cholopenitz, Charae #belarus

Bruce Soskind <sweetestchild@...>

I am searching for information about these two shtetlach (Cholopenitz,
Charae) that my Grandfather's family came from. I believe they are in
either Vitebsk Gubernya or Mogilev Gubernya. My family name is
SOSKIN(D) (my grandfather added the "d" - everyone else spelled it
without.

Also >from that part of my family is: SCHACHRAI, and CHANIN.

Thanks for the help!
Shalom!

May be the town CHLOPENICZI is the right spelling? If I am not mistaken it
is on the territory of Lituania today. The other town I can not find at all.
Check the old maps

Good luck

I had a Soskin in my family...maybe a cousin of my grandmothers.

Herschell Soskin was a career army man, lived in LA, had one daughter. He was
closely related to the Sykes family of Baltimore.

Any relation

Very likely the Cholopenitz in question is Kholopenichi, which is about 30 miles
northeast of Borisov in the Minsk gubernya. There are entries >from
Kholopenichi (spelled Holopenichi there) in the 1874 Borisov revision list,
which was translated for the Borisov Research Family (founded by Barbara Khait
<Bkhait@aol.com>. The relevant entries for the Soskin(d) name are as follows
(sequence for each entry is last name, first name, birth date, father's name,
town).
Soskind David 1779 Holopinichi
Siskind Girsh 1790 Borisov
Soskind Girsh 1804 David Holopinichi
Soskind Leyzer 1823 Shamok
Siskind Mejer 1846 Nohim Borisov
Soskind Movsha 1848 Leyzer Shamok
Siskind Nohim 1815 Girsh Borisov
Siskind Pihna 1815 Shimshon Borisov
Soskind Sosia 1809 ? Holopinichi
I would be interested in hearing >from anyone who knows anything about
TOUGER/TAUGER/TAVGER in Kholopenichi (I know of one -- the grandfather of
Gershon Tauger of Herzliya, Israel -- who was born there)

The shtetlach Cholopenitz and Charae are located in Belarus. Cholopenitz
(Cholopenichi - in the local language) is located about 60 km. by the road
northeast of Borisov and >from Cholopenitz about 30 km. by the road
northeast to Charae (Chereya - in the local language). In Czarist Russia,
Cholopenitz was located in Minsk Gubernya and Charae in Mogilev Gubernya.
Today, Charae is located in Vitebsk district.

Last summer I visited Cholopenichi, because my family is connected to here.
All that is left >from the Jewish citizens who lived there is the neglected
cemetery which is similar now to a grazing field with gravestones popping
up here and there.

The SOSKIN family is found amongst the family names of Borisov. On the list
of those buried in the cemetery there, there are three Soskins. In the
Borisov telephone directory, there is one Soskin, and I know a citizen of
Borisov who has in his family tree some Soskins.
Also the Sachrain family is found on the list of those buried in the
cemetery in Borisov.

Dear Bruce:

I noticed that you are researching the name Chanin and also the town of
Vitebsk. Most of my family came >from Vitebsk. I have one entry for the
name HINDA HANEN(CHANIN), born circa 1840 in Vitebsk and married to MORRIS
SATKIN of Vitebsk. By any chance is this a part of your family?

Many thanks.
