I need a crash course in understanding where the records are for the town of
Baranovichi.

I have the 9 record groups, but under, "repository City" it lists Brest.

When I look at the archives for Brest, it says chronological year is from
1919.

I am interested in archival material pre- 1900's.
Where do I look?

I understand the archives is being closed for Novogrudok and I am
considering hiring a researcher. I presume it is Oleg. Am I correct?

I understood the handout at the Toronto seminar, but the one on the web
appears to be different.

The RTR database is an outstand tool to identify what records are available
for your shtetl. However, there are some other sources that you should also
check and the links can be found on one of our SIG webpages:

One of the links on this page will allow you to get to an official Belarus
government website (in English) and search a partial inventory of archive
records. I look at what was available under Brest uezd in the Grodno branch
of the NHAB and found Jewishe census records for 1795 Fond/inventory
24/7 items 263, 264, 266 - 271, 273, 274, 276. If you look at up Best on
the RTR database you find in the Grodno archive the 1808; 1912-1916 census
in Fond/Opis/Delo: 2/2/69; 492/1/108-109, 189-191; 492/3/90-94. If you look
at http://www.jewishgen.org/belarus/grodno_archives.htm, you will see that
the 1897 census for Brest uezd shtetls can be found in fond 100, opis 1,
delo 66 through 109 of the Grodno branch of the NHAB.

The point I am trying to make is that you must look in more then one source.
In the above example there are three different inventories of archival
holdings and each of them has records listed that the other don't.

When I did this search it was on Brest. A search of Brest uezd or oblast on
the RTR database, revealed some additional census data listed as being in
the NHAB (Grodno):

CENSUS Year List: 1795; 1806-1808; 1816; 1831; 1834; 1850; 1851-1860; 1864;
1866-1875; 1877-1879; 1892-1896; 1855-1864 (JEWISH FARMERS)
Fond/Opis/Delo: 24/7/76, 79, 263-276, 279-281, 288-290; 292, 296-298, 309,
311; 2/2/69

Lesson learned: when using the RTR database, be sure to search not only by
town, but also by other geographic area. For example:
Brest (town)
Brest District
Brest Gmina
Brest Poviat
Brest Region
Brest Uezd.

I could not find a reference in the RTR database for the 1897 Census for
Brest uezd. Miriam Wiener has written to me informing me that she is
continually refining her database as she receives confirmations >from the
archivists.

If you look at http://www.jewishgen.org/belarus/grodno_archives.htm, you
will see that the 1897 census for Brest uezd shtetls can be found in fond
100, opis 1, delo 66 through 109 of the Grodno branch of the NHAB. This
inventory was done by Dimytri Panov and indicates the existence of the 1897
Russian census for portions of what was Grodno gubernia in 1897. This census
is particularly valuable because it includes males and females and has the
place of birth, place of residence at time of census, and place of
registration.

The existence of this census is very exciting to me as my grandparents left Wisoke-Litovsk
in Brest uezd in 1900-1902. However, I have no clue as to how to get the information
contained in it. Is there someone or some organization doing look-ups in the 1897
census? Knowing that it exists is only a first step if we can't access the information it
contains.
