1857 Arrivals in NYC #usa
Robert Hanscom <rodihan@...>
A number of my relatives came to New York City en masse in September
1857. They were widow Rachel TESCHNER (nee Wilhelm) (1798-1876), and
several children: stepson Aaron Teschner (and his large family), son
Abraham Teschner (and family), daughter Fanny Braun (and family), son
Salomon Teschner (and wife), son Wolfgang Teschner (and family), son
Markus Teschner (and wife), and daughter Rebeka Teschner (unmarried at
the time, but later wife of Sigmund Hirschler). This family originated
from Vag Besztercze, Trencin Co., Hungary [now Povazska Bystrica,Slovakia] and largely stayed right in Manhattan. They were a close-knit
group of relatives, and a family circle remained intact until the early 1900s.
Has anyone else come across this family in their own research? Here are
a list of some of the families they married into: POPPER, BLUH, BRAUN,
HIRSCHLER, ROSENZWEIG, WALDMAN, SCHICK, GOLDWATER, FRIEDBERG,
SCHWARZSCHILD, TYROLER, ABELES, FISCHMANN, SINGER, PASKUS, PINCUS,
METZGER, KLEINBERGER, STERN, STRAUSS, WEISER, BARNETT, COHEN, LEVY,
NEWBERGER, and many others.
I would be interested in exchanging information with anyone who has
studied some of these same NYC Jewish surnames. Please reply privately.
Also, I would like to find out more about this 1857 emigration from
Hungary. Did other Jewish families come over at the same time? Does
anyone know what prompted this? Best regards,
