1939 German Minority [Jews] Census #germany

Jim Bennett <bennett@...>

This census, conducted in early 1939, enumerated all the Jews still in
Germany at the time.
It was microfilmed by the LDS many years ago, and is very useful, though it
takes a lot of time to go through index-card 16mm. films first and then on
to the actual forms.

Does anyone know whether it was ever image digitalized, databased, or
indexed in searchable form? I recall hearing that the USHMM did
something. Is it accessible?

Google < Volkszahlung 1939 Datenbank Bundesarchiv >
and you'll find numerous references to a database of the Minority
Census released by the German Bundesarchiv in 2001.

The database appears to be available at the Bundesarchiv, the New
Synagogue in Berlin and also at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.

The Mormon Church microfilmed the remnant of the 1939 Minority Census. I do
not know if these microfilms are available in Israel.

On Aug. 30, in a message to this list about the digitized version of the 1939
German Minority Census, I wrote

"The database appears to be available at the Bundesarchiv, the New
Synagogue in Berlin and also at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.
See <http://inquery.ushmm.org/uia-cgi/uia_doc/query/1?uf=uia_cIGOhy> "

The web address I cited was apparently temporary: it was the URL for the
search results I found but subsequent attempts to go to the same address
yielded error messages. To see the USHMM's description of the census,
search the museum's Name Lists Catalog
<http://resources.ushmm.org/Holocaust-Names/List-Catalog/search/>
for the words Minority Census.

Sorry for any inconvenience. Renee
