Hello,

Several of the names in an early 19th century tax list (Schutz- und
Silbergeldliste) for the community of Landsberg an der Warthe (now
Gorzow Wielkopolsk) have the Hebrew acronym chet-resh in place of
bet-resh (i.e. son of Mr.), for example, Yosef chet-resh Abraham,
instead of Yosef bet-resh Abraham.

Would anyone perhaps be able to explain the meaning of this acronym?

Mr Justin Levy send me a copy of the documents about the acronym
Chet-Reish.

After I see the copy I know that Mr Levy was right with his writing of
the letters Chet-Reish.

According my knowledge it was written : Chet-Reis and it mean Chatn =
Rabi whats mean the son-in-law of .

In my first letter >from yesterday I have written that it was a acronym
of Chacham-Rabi or Chaver-Rabi

and know we have also Chatan-Rabi.

The Chet stands for Chatan = son in law.
This is common, particularly when the father in law
is better known than the father, either because he is a prominent
citizen, or because the father lived in another town.

Dear Genners,

The Hebrew Acronym, Chet -Reish is Chacham Rabi and it mean a Wise
man, (in German : Ein gelehrten Herr)
But it can also be a Chaver Rabi and then it mean a member of the
Jewish synagogue that have a function like a Chazan (cantor),
Gabai (treasurer ) or another function. The title Chaver you get after
years in the function and it is a respect full title.

But in this case I can not see any connection between the Acronym
Chet-Reish and the combination Son of Mr .

Perhaps you can send me a sample of this document and I try to find out
what it mean
