On-line journals #galicia

I would like to respectfully disagree with David and Beverly. I do not want
to see an online journal for Gesher Galicia.

I already spend all day in front of a computer at work. And I spent far too
much leisure time in front of a computer to keep up with my genealogy and
other interests. I do not want to have to sit at a computer in order to
read a journal nor do I want to have to print one out on my slow printer.

I want a print journal to read when I'm on the train or in bed at night or
whenever I want. I want to be able to keep it and refer to it at some later
date. I have all past copies of Gesher Galicia and like being able to look
things up. Another sig that I belong to has put their journal on-line and,
truth be told, I don't look at it. I would hate to see that happen to our
publication.

I know how hard it is to produce a journal as I did so for JGSLI for over 5
years. However the printing is the least of the work. So I hope that
everyone will reconsider.

Lastly, I don't believe that there is any way to restrict who is reading an
online journal. So why would people pay their dues? Just a thought.

Once you have a journal written electronically, distribution can be done in
multiple ways. Figure out a cost for each way. You can charge for online
information, just check out Ancestry.Com which uses a paid subscription,
KnowledgeX.Com which lets you purchase by the records, Amazon.Com where you
buy books and they ship them. Seems to me, once the material is created and
stored electronically, there should be multiple distribution methods
available, all to be purchased via credit card online like we do with Jewish
Generosity. Question is to sell by subscription, sell by the issue,
premimum for printing and shipping as paper and postage do have a different
cost than online access (thought there are interent providers you can use
for free, with a local phone call), and you now can access the web and email
from cell phones and personal organizers.

May I add my thoughts to this. I, too, would like to see the print copy
continued. I know many Gesher members who would not be able to access the
on-line edition. It would be too much of a hassle for them. I prefer the
print version myself even though I could access the on-line one if need be.
One person who is a member of Gesher is extremely Orthodox and her rabbi does
not permit computers in the home so she would be left out. Others just don't
have the computer skills to access something like that. I would not like
having to print the newsletter. I love reading it when I have the time and
carrying it around with me until I finish it. I keep them and refer to them
over and over again.
