Carol Cohen <cgandhc@...>

Dear Galitzianers: I am next!! My grandfather who was >from Podhajce
in Galicia always recited the following rhyme to our family, and I
would love to
know what it means:

Ekeda, mekeda, sukeda, mah (maybe zuge de ma - said the mother?)
Ahbul, Fahbul, dubul, dah
Ex, mex, trix, a roce
Upiana, pushikana
Erek shmata
Em grem, yushik, nem
Kaneece, kanoose, kanoss

I have found one other person >from the Tarnopol Gibernia who knew
this rhyme, but she doesn't know what it means either. Any help
translating this would be appreciated. Thanks, Carol Cohen

Hi......I printed out a bunch of the Yiddish Nursery Rhymes and took them to
my Yiddish Shmues Kreis (Chat Group).....no one recognized them and altho
they were able to translate the Yiddish words, said that most of the other
words (mainly the first couple of lines) were nonsense syllables.........I
still think that aside >from being childrens' games, these little ditties were
a form of Keyn ain a hura.....warding off the evil eye....ptoo
