For a special Drohobycz records project I researched the meaning of 'addresses' in Drohobycz. What you are asking about is a special 'quirk' of Drohobycz records, something that had me baffled for a long time until I was able to 'crack' the code. There were no street names in Drohobycz before about 1900. Actual street names listed in the records starting about 1900 will usually have a "ul." as part of the name for ulica. The earlier vital records >from Drohobycz do not list street names. Records that do not record an event happening in a nearby town (like Stebnik or Modrycz) record the abreviated names of one of the seven Drohobycz districts/neighborhoods/suburbs along with a house number in that area. These seven areas were later incorporated into central Drohobycz city but are listed separately in these old records. For anyone researching Drohobycz who wants to know the names of these districts here they are: The seven Drohobycz Districts usually appear as abbreviations such as Lisz, Zag, Zaw, Zwar, Zad, Wojt and Pleb. The full names are Plebania, Lisznia (not to be confused with the nearby town of Lisznia which when listed in records is spelled out in full and not abbreviated like the district name), Zwarycz, Wojtowska Gora, Zadworna, Zagrody Miejskie and Zawieczna. Sometimes you will also see "N" or "miasto" for the main city houses not in the seven districts, sometimes only a number. Is this an abbreviation for something else?
