"After much deliberation, I am re-writing my 2006 book, The Galitzianers: The Jews of Galicia, 1772-1918. I would appreciate input from anyone familiar with the Krakow records in the FamilySearchdatabase, in particular, the census of 1870 and the military eligibility census of 1847-1850. Do they include Jews?" In addition to FamilySearch's records, one of best, and most extensive, resources for Krakow Jewish researchers is Dan Hirschberg's "Jewish Krakow Documents" database found here: http://www.ics.uci.edu/~dan/genealogy/Krakow/index.html Many images are available on his site, and while not everything is indexed, if you know the page number involved, you can view the record that way. Yes, Jews are listed in the 1870 census. He covers the following areas: Early Records: before 1810 LDS Microfilms: contents and on-line record availability: images (35,000 records): B/M/D 1798-1809, 1810-55 Census images: 1870, 1890, 1900, 1910 Search Engine: data >from over 250,000 records, including over 85,000 extended B/M/D records Early Family Trees: over 700 trees rooted before 1800 (explanation of tree format ) Other Documents and Marriage Analysis The other places to look for Krakow records are JRI-Poland (www.jri-poland.org) and Gesher Galicia's All Galicia Database (http://search.geshergalicia.org), which are both free search engines, plus Shoreshim (http://www.shoreshim.org/en/default.asp), which you can search for free but must pay to see records. There will be overlap between all of these website and search engines, so best to check out all of them. Even Dan Kazez's site -- CRARG, the Czestochowa-Radomsko Region Research Group (http://www.crarg.org) -- will contain freely searchable Holocaust-era records for some Krakow residents. Gesher Galicia also the book "A Guide to Jewish Genealogy: Krakow" by Geoffrey Weisgard available for purchase on our website for only $10 plus shipping. Proceeds go towards continuing GG research. You can purchase the book on our merchandise page (scroll down) -- http://www.geshergalicia.org/merchandise/ Or click the "merchandise" tab on our home page -- http://www.geshergalicia.org. Gesher Galicia is thrilled that Suzan -- our founder and first president -- will be re-writing her book, as the world of Galician research keeps growing and changing. All,
genealogyindexer.org has an excellent step-by-step way of using the 1890, 1900, and 1910 Krakow censuses. Thank you, Logan! http://genealogyindexer.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=14 Rob Rob Weisskirch rweisskirch@csumb.edu
