Dear Genners,

Can someone tell me the modern name of a place called EMLEK NAGYHIDROL? To the best of my information it was part of Austro-Hungary, and is nowadays in Transylvania.

Thanks for any help,
Shaul Sharoni,

The place you are looking for is in fact NAGYHID.
Emlek means souvenir and the suffix -rol means from.
Emlek Nagyhidrol means souvenir >from Nagyhid.

it literally means "souvenir >from big bridge". i couldn't find a place called "nagyhid" in the 1913 gazetteer, but there are lots of places containing the word "hid" (and at least a dozen in present-day romania).

Shaul,

What is the source of your information for this place name? Any
clues about where this place might be located such as nearby towns?
As you may know, the area once known as Transylvania is now part of
Romania. The word "emlek" means relic, souvenir, or, perhaps, in
memory of ... Is this the title of a yizkor book?

There were, of course, many places with the prefix "nagy", which
means big. Many of these places are in presentday Romania. I
searched the 1913 Gazetteer and other sources and didn't find any
matches.

The name of the place should, according your records,
be Nagyhid. Yet my Google search for this exact
spelling didn't come up with anything, either. On the
other hand I found a Nagyhida being mentioned on this
page:
http://lexikon.katolikus.hu/LINKEK/LINKGGGY/06GYOGYS.HTML

According to the above document Nagyhida was (is?) in
Abauj-Torna county. So I checked out on this map:
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/abauj-t.jpg
but he closest I found was Nagyida, which can
theoretically be the right place, except it is not in
Transylvania but Slovakia, and now it goes by the name
of Velka Ida.
