Gravesend Jewish community #unitedkingdom

Dear siggers,

Lois Kaufman wrote;-
Does anyone know anything about this school, or a Jewish community in this
area at this time?

I am inc. a letter in response to my own enquiry to the Gravesend, Kent
library.

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the Jewish community in Gravesend
1850-1900.
There was quite a sizeable community in the town at this time, with at least
2 schools for the Jewish community and two Mayors were of Jewish origin
(Berkowitz in 1887 and H.E Davis who was Mayor 6 times between 1902 and
1923). I believe there is section in the Gravesend cemetery reserved for
those of the Jewish faith.

On further enquiry the nearest Jewish cemetery is Chatham.
I would be interested in the address for the Jewish school as my own
relatives lived at Milton.

regards,

There was a small private Jewish girls boarding school on the 1871 census
situated
Old Dover Rd, Perry St , Northfleet , Gravesend

Head - Henriette Dreyfus ( b. Alsace )
Governess - Miriam Singer ( Sister Rev Simeon Singer )
Pupils - I, L, H and A Jacobs ( ? sisters) ages twins ? 15, 15 ,14 and 8
C. Isaacs 14 C and L Isaac ? twins 11 . R, Simmonds 11 , L. Lyon 7
snd G. Cohen 11

Is this strange establishment of interest -
Cant trace Henriette Dreyfus b. 1842 or Miriam Singer b. 1848 later.

I have found a photo of the former synagogue
www.stevebulman.f9.co.uk/churches/images/kent/gravesend/syn.jpg.

It says "off Windmill St. 177 TQ 647 734" That would be the OS Grid
Reference.

This is the location
