reported plans for Prague Jewish Cemetery possible hoax #general

To the many concerned genners who are sending us the messages regarding
the possible destruction of the 800 year old Prague Jewish Cemetery, we
have been alerted that this is a possible hoax, or at the very least
misinformation.

All the messages coming in refer to an article that has supposedly
appeared in a newspaper called the Jewish Tribune, and to a purported
letter written by Rabbi Sidon to the London Committee for the Preservation
of Jewish Cemeteries in Europe...yet none who write to us have actually
seen the newspaper article, or a citation of the date of publication,
nor has anyone who is writing seen the references in any other newspaper.

It is all hearsay, and suspiciously "hoaxlike" since most messages being
reported and quoted to us contain the advice "please forward this to as
many of your friends as possible", the refrain one finds in hoaxes 99.9%
of the time!

So, until any of our UK JewishGen family actually *sees* this article
in the Jewish Tribune, or is willing to contact the London Committee
for the Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries in Europe to clarify the
situation, we will continue to maintain a skeptical stance.

The other thing that makes it look to me to be a hoax is that, in all the
visits I have made in Prague, I never saw or heard of such a cemetery, and
my maps of Prague do not show a cemetery (Jewish, Buddhist, or other) on
ul. Vladislavova, the street named in the article. That area is one of
commercial buildings.
