Looking for info on Russian Jews #general

Peter J Eldredge Jnr <pje@...>

Hi, just discovered that part of my family came >from Russia (Baltic States).

They are belived to be Jews, but I am kind of wondering why they should
emmigrate.

Does anyone know any good history resource web sites that would be able to
tell me about the Russians and the Jews abt the late 1800`s?

Many Thanks

PJ

I think a really great introduction to the subject of the Jews in Russia
is the online exhbit "Beyond the Pale: The History of Jews in Russia". It
covers the time you're interested in, Peter, as well as the time before
and after that.
It's wonderfully illustrated too. The URL is:

Enjoy!

Yes, my website has hundreds of pages of translated memoirs
about Jewish life in Old Russia. This information is available free
online, and cannot be found anywhere else, period...online or
offline. The information includes the memoirs of Falk Zolf
describing his life in Russia between 1900 and 1926, translated
by myself; and the memoirs of Yekheskel Kotik, describing his
life around the time of the turn of the century. The Kotik memoirs
are translated by Lucas Bruyn. You can find all this information
at my website,

Thank you to everyone who has offered help with my query. I could not
possibly imagine I would get so much help.

The info I`ve been given has involved a lot of online time and [snip] a
lot of printing. I`m spending ages reading and not much time doing anything
else.
This isn`t as much because I`m trying to answer questions about my
ancestors, but because its fascinating stuff.

Thanks to everyone who offered help. I have a lot to get through and what I
have so far is great stuff.

Many Thanks

PJ
