Dear Genners
A friend of mine who does not have a computer is researching his name and I volunteered to ask you about it. Is the name Asman or any variant of it Jewish? Does it have a meaning? He thinks it may be Persian or Turkish. His ancestors -he thinks were >from the republic of Georgia. I thank you in advance for any help Lili Susser Susserl@... |

"Asman" is the name of a Persian sky-god, and in Sanskrit is "heaven" or "stone". But a Google search turns up several Jewish references, including http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/ushachi/ushatz.html and http://www.jcpa.org/jl/jl451.htm So it could be Jewish. But there's also www.colgate.edu/scene/mar1998/alumni/news45.html which refers to a person of Armenian descent. Robert Israel israel@... Vancouver, BC, Canada |
