Meaning of "Yadina" #general
James Pannozzi <jimserac@...>
Does anyone know what "Yadina" (phonetic spelling, sounds like
"Yadeena") means in Hebrew Yiddish or Ladino? Does it have anything to do with chicken? Thanks Jim |

Thanks.
I suspect the word is slang and may not be of a Hebrew language but I have no way to know. I have learned that the word Yadina (or Yadeena, however you prefer the phonetic spelling), was used in the following context: One Sicilian person, making reference to another Sicilian person (woman) who ate chicken frequently, called her "Yadeena". Since no Sicilian or Italian person had heard of this word, I was searching anywhere to find an origin or language that fit. There is a possibility that the Sicilian person using this word was a descendant of Spanish Jewish exiles who later settled in Sicily. Thanks Again Jim |

It is a feminine form (in the manner of "Josepha" for "Joseph") for the verb form "Yadin", meaning "He Judges", where "He" refers to the Deity". Does it have anything to do with chicken? There is no obvious connection with chicken, either in the coop or on the table.
