Jehiel Mechel, the Zolochever Magid #general

Philip Elias <p.elias@...>

Looking for information about Rabbi Jehiel Mechel, the Zolochever Magid (c.
1731-1786), a disciple of the Ba'al Shem Tov (founder of the Hassidic
movement). According to the Encyclopedia Judaica, R. Jehiel Mechel was the
founder of a dynasty of zaddikim which spread throughout Galicia and
Ukraine. Does anyone know the surname of this rabbi (if indeed he had one)
and if there are any descendants living today.

Thanks,

Philip Elias

What's the meaning of Mechel? Is it a Jewish
name or Ashkenazic one?
Mechel was a sort of nickname of a parent
of mine and there is a little town in the
Non Valley (now in Italy, untill the first
World War under the Austro-Hungarian Empire)
called Mechel, and written in the same way.
Thank you.

Mechel is a version of Michael, which is a Hebrew name.

The name Yechieyl Mekhel is Legal Hebrew double name, the name Yechieyl
being of Hebrew origin (Chronicles I 15:18), the secon Mekhel being a
Yiddish name and a kinui to Yechieyl. In a Jewish divorce document (get)
the name must be written as Yechieyl hamechune Mekhl/Mikhl.

The names Mekhl/Mikhl also form a Legal double name with the Hebrew name
Michaeyl: Michaeyl hamechune Mekhl/Mikhl.

In civil documents, his name could have appeared as Mekhl/Mikhl, rather
than in this double name format. I am not aware that the Yiddish name
Mekhl was used in linkage to any other Hebrew name.

If I am not mistaken, (and I may very be) the Chasidic dynasty of Zvil
which was adjacent to Zlotzchov were the descendants of the Maggid. The
Zvil dynasty, or at least some branch of the live in Jerusalem and there
name is GOLDMAN.

Genners more knowledgeable, please correct me if I'm wrong.

My wife's greatuncle who lived in Zlochov and was a rebbe in the Yeshiva,
I believe was named after Yechiel Michel.
