Shtetl based burial societies. #general

I know >from my grandfather's Drohobycz society that
there weren't restrictions on members descent >from the
Drohobycz - male and female spouses were members and
buried in the society plots. Also non related doctors
were members and eligible for benefits - they joined
to get patients. Also, when the membership began
decreasing in the late 1970's and nobody was joining,
the society started selling plots to non members.
First friends and relatives of members. Then basically
any Jew who contacted them or the cemetery office was
able to purchase a plot until I turned the society
over to New York state liquidation. There are a bunch
of Russian immigrant Jews who purchased and are buried
in the Drohobycz society plot in Mt. Lebanon and they
were never members of the society and were not from
Drohobycz. You can't assume burial in a society plot
means the person is >from that shtetl.

As we have noted in past messages we have inferred
that the interred are not necessarily descended from
the shtetl sponsored site. I have gone out of my way
recently when researching landsmanshaften to bore
myself examining constitutions of the landsmanshaften.
They might be explicit about what constitutes an
eligible Jew or forbidding making payments outside the
United States but they do not mention [so far] that
the member descend >from the shtetl which has given its
name to the organization. Then ,of course, the spouse
would not be excluded if they were married to the
original member. Therefore we might safely assume that
the origin of the interred might not necessarily match
the shtetl title of the society.
