Can anyone on the list tell me what, if any, realtionship there is
between the two shtetls (?) Wolochisk and Yachnovich. One source
(marriage certificate) lists the former as my father's birth place,
while another source (ship passenger list) identifies the other.

Shtetlseeker suggests these two towns are probably Volochisk and
Yakhnovtsy, Ukraine, both roughly 200 miles WSW of Kiev. Their
coordinates are 49.32, 26.10 and 49.38, 26.19. Volochisk seems to be
the larger place. People often said they came >from a nearby and more
well-known town ("I'm >from Boston") rather than the smaller place

from which they actually came ("I'm >from Newton"). My grandfather's

petition for citizenship says he was born in Balta but his
declaration of intention says Podolsk (the name of the gubernia).

The town of Yachnovich is only some 10 miles NE of the larger and better
known border town of Volochisk/Podvolochisk.Your father was possibly born
in Yachnovich but decided to list the more famous Volochisk as his place
of birth on the marriage certificate in honor of that important.occasion.
