Finding a business in the 1929 Polish Business Directory #general
Hazanjo <hazanjo@...>
OK...I've given this a try on my own. Either the information isn't in this
directory or I'm going about it the wrong way. My Aunt asked me to find an address for my Great Grandfather's (Israel Joseph (Yasoff Srol)Kanet) place of business in Czyzewo, Poland. He was a Tsitzasmacher. He left for the US in 1930 leaving the business to his son-in-law. I assumed that this meant his place of business would be in the 1929 Directory, but so far I've had no luck. I'd appreciate any help or guidance. Thanks, Hazel Sandow Boon Searching: HABER - Dzurów, Ukraine; STARK - Warsaw, Poland; SADOFSKY/SADOWSKY - Lodz, Poland; KANET/KANNETT - Czyzewo, Poland |

Just as today, those who make tzitzis (four-cornered undergarment) usually
work at home and therefore their names need not exist in any "directory" of such workers. Unless he employed a team of workers (doubtful) working in a "factory", there woudn't be any address to search. This would explain the lack of reference. An alternate search might be forreferences to his home which probably served as his workshop where Jews went to buy the garment. address for my Great Grandfather's (Israel Joseph (Yasoff Srol)Kanet)place of business in Czyzewo, Poland. This line of thinking occurred to me as well. My Aunt tells me, however, that there was a separate place of business where the Tzitsas were made as he used to cross the back yard of their house to come home in the afternoon for a nap. How would I go about finding the address for either structure other than my relatives' address books? If you go to http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/Czyzew/Czyzew.html you will see the Table of Contents for the Czyzewo book, including an article titled, "Czyzewo's Tzitzis Maker". It has not yet been translated. If you contact Czyzewo YB Project Coordinator Jen Mohr at < MohrJen@... > she may be able to help you. |

Either the information isn't in Hazel, Please consider the following: According to 1929 Poland Business Directory, Czyzewo had 1,835 registered residents (1921 census). If we compare this figure to 1,595 town's Jewish residents it appears that over 85% of this town was Jewish. Now, please note that The Directory lists the presence in town Roman Catholic Church but somehow failed to list a synagogue. Perhaps example of this omission will explain to you lack of listing for the local tsitsmaker. Alexander Sharon Calgary, Ab |
