NY obit search question #general

Sara Lynns

I am searching obituaries for NY 1965-1985
from my experience, the obits online are not
comprehensive.

What would be a good source? NY times?
NY Jewish newspapers?

Hello Jackie,
You can search the New York Times online >from 1851-1995 at...

http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/nytimes/advancedsearch.html?

They charge a payment for any articles found that you want access to. I
don't know if all obituaries are included, but I have seen some come up
in searches. You might try searching for a surname with words like
obituary or obituaries or death notice(s). The New York Times is also
indexed in book form offline and some libraries have these book indexes
on hand. The NYT is also available on microfilm at some libraries. You
might also try...

Online New York Death Indexes & Records

Good luck with your search.

I've joined the Godfrey Memorial Library, located in Middletown,
Connecticut, to get access to a myriad of sources. For $35.00 a year, I have
online access >from home through its website for The New York Times,
1851-2001, L.A. Times, 1881-1984, and Washington Post, 1877-1988 (all three
newspapers are >from ProQuest). I also have access to the federal censuses
(>from Heritage Quest), Newspaper Archive Elite (>from Ebsco), which has
newspapers >from around the US (I found articles with my mother's surname
back to 1904), and PERSI (Periodical Source Index, >from ProQuest), and the
full text of more than 25,000 books (>from Heritage Quest).

It's a great buy for the price.

Yes, the NYTimes web site has a fee for articles, but Heritage Quest is
free...and in the NY area, it contains the full 100 years of the NY
Times....Heritage Quest is mostly available in libraries.........ask your
librarian......your local version may also have access to local papers in
your community; it all depends on what portions the library has signed up
for. You might try local colleges too.
Happy Hunting!
