Can someone in New Zealand or other knowledgeable Genner give me the name,
address and contact person for the Jewish Cemetery in Rotorua, New Zealand?
Am looking for the place of interment and row/grave location of Gertrude
SINCLAIR CASSEL, born Glasgow, Scotland 1930, died Rotorua
1980. Gertrude's maternal grandfather, Hillel Meir LANGMAN (1850-1943) and
my paternal great grandmother, Malka GREENBLATT nee LANGMAN (1852-1903)
were contemporaries and 2nd cousins in their native Vandziogala, Kaunas
District, Lithuania (Hillel Meir LANGMAN immigrated to Scotland c. 1883).
The New Zealand section of the IAJGS Cemetery Project webpage on JewishGen
does not list a Jewish cemetery for Rotorua, which is located on the North
Island. The only cemeteries listed for the North Island are in Auckland,
Dannevirke, Napier, Palmerston North, Park Island, Wellington, and Welcome
Bay. If there is no Jewish cemetery in Rotorua, where would a Jewish
person who died in that town be most likely to be buried?
Following in the mold of the definition of a genealogist as a person who
travels great distances to seek out dead relatives who are even more
distant in generations, I plan on visiting this cemetery in the first
quarter of 2006 while on a 3-1/2 week tour to New Zealand.
JewishGen requires that all surnames in a message be in boldface, but
please note that I am not researching any of the aforementioned surnames
other than LANGMAN and specifically only those whose ancestry hails back
to Lithuania. Just for the record, Gertrude's father, Maurice John
SINCLAIR (c. 1889-1950) was born in Leckava, Siauliai District, Lithuania
as Moshe-Yechezkiel ZELIKOVICH. Will supply any interested party with his
Glasgow matzevah image.
Please also note that my schedule does not currently permit me to respond
to messages that are off-topic to this one.
New York, NY
Ada, there is no Jewish Cemetery in Rotorua.
I checked my database of over 42,000 Australasian entries, and found
only 108 women named Gertrude, none of which appear to be the person
There is a significant Jewish Community in Auckland. And, a Jewish Cemetary
in the downtown area.
