Some tips on searching... #general

This is a very simple but very useful suggestion for all of us on this list.

Don't limit yourself by sticking to an exact spelling of a first name
(of course, there is always Soundex for the last name).

Recently, I discovered an entry in the Ellis Island database that I
would not have found save for paging through certain manifests--very
patiently--in my 'spare time.'
Rather than "Yitzchok", the name was listed as "Itzig." Thus, my
searching with a "Y" for the first name was futile. Another example
is "Yankel" for "Yaakov" which wouldn't show up with an "exact"
search.

These are some variations found in the Ellis Island database (so far).
Maybe you'll find someone that didn't show up before--I'd be very
happy if you did! Sometimes the difference between finding something
and not finding it is simply in the spelling...

For Galicia:
Calicia
E. Galicia
Galicy
Silesia (not 100% sure on this one, though)

Also, simple abbreviations such as "Aust" for Austria and "Russ" for
Russia might be keeping you >from obtaining good results. (That's
where "wildcard" searches come in handy).

OBLETZ, ROSOFF (Dokshytz - Belarus) ; FINN (Gluboko - Vilna)
RAFKIN (Dwinsk - Russia) ; ZEMBLE (Lushnitz - Russia)
DUBOWY (Zalocie - Austria)

It always pays to cast a wide net. Spelling is never exact in genealogy
research. And I have found Yankel or Yaakov also under Yakov, and Jankel
And Jakov. If you don't find someone on the first go-round using
Steve Morse's One-Step to the EIDB, you should definitely get creative.
Remember these manifests were prepared when the immigrant boarded their
Ship in various ports and the spelling could very easily be determined
by the knowledge of the ship's personnel who wrote the list. On large
sailings I have found different handwriting every several pages and
sometimes ethnic groups were all grouped together.

The note above is quoted in its entirety, except for the name, which
has been blanked out "to protect the innocent". I'm sure that it makes
much sense to anyone that read the message to which it is a response
and remembers it. It makes very little sense to anyone else. That is
only partly because of the impossibility of threading messages, even
on the newsgroup, let alone in the email aspect of the forum.

Please, people, when you respond to a message, quote enough of it to
render your response understandable.
