When I found my father's ship line, there he was with his family, and his
name was Mysl.

Has any one ever heard of this name?

We always knew his Hebrew name was Aron, and he was called Joseph.

Hello all,

Looking at the name phonetically, it was probably pronounced the same as if
it were spelled "Meisel", and Meisel certainly has been a surname among
Jews, notably in Prague, where one of the eminent Jewish families was named
Meisel. Perhaps it's one of those names that slips back and forth between
first and surnames.

Just a thought.

Passenger Lists, 1865-1922. The main page is:

The family is listed on page 37 of the manifest. However,
the name was written Mysl.

Also, this family is indexed on the popular UK migration
database under the name GREENBLATT, parents were Benj
and Leah. Children Wolf, Michael and Rachael. However,
Mysl is not indexed under that name. Our suggestion is to
view the UK manifest and see how this name is written there.
Maybe that could answer some questions that Sid has about
this name.

Suggest further looking at the variations of Yiddish names
Mishl/Meshl/Mesl in the JGS given names data base.

Sid, since you give no backround information - dates, places
etc - it's impossible to make any real suggestions. But may I
propose that 'Mysl' might (or might not !) be a contraction of
the given name Mstislav (as in the cellist Mstislav
Rostropovich).

Coincidentally, my grandfather's hebrew name was always thought
to be Yoseph but on one ketuba, it is written as Aron.

I'd like to see the manifest, if it's possible to provide it.

But I tend to wonder this:
When your father approach the counter and the clerk asked
'NAME?' - Perhaps your father (or his mother or father) said
"mmm, yussel" and the clerk wrote MYSL.

Guess I see things in a different light.

No, but Michael is nine years old - using birth year 1902 exact in
Search terms - so I suggest he is the Mysl boy, name misheard or
misspellt on arrival.

We have had a number of replies - but why speculate? As he left the UK he
was called Michael. He appears to have a brother with a more puzzling name:
Uryph or Urysh? What was he called on arrival in Canada? Uryph appears as a
hit on a site called Wittipedia - another unknown to me!

Now you can all think of possible alternatives and once again miss Professor
Jerry Esterson.

On the Canadian manifest which we pointed to the
other day, there is both a Michael 9, and a Mysl 7,
both male. So most likely the Michael indexed in the
UK database is the older brother.

We also saw the index for Uryph at the UK site but have not
looked at the manifest to verify the accuracy of the transcriber.
It is more likely this is Mysl if the age is correct.

In addition, Mysl is a valid Yiddish name for several Hebrew names .
How it relates to Aaron or Joseph would be more speculation without
additional information.

Note that this ship left the UK and arrived in Canada. We magnified both
the English and Canadian manifest images. On the English side the name
appears as Uryff. On the Canadian manifest, it is Ury?l. Orush and Orl are
both Yiddish nicknames for Aron. So this is our best explanation.

The use of the name Joseph in Canada still can't be explained without more
details.

Dear David and Mrs.

Dad was called "Yussel" by his friends and I think that's where
Joseph came from.

His grandfather on his mother's side was named Uryz, so that is probably
where Uryff and Uryl come in.

We hadn't known that he was named Uryz.

The mystery goes on.
