Thanks to the meticulous genealogy work of Rabbi Malcolm Stern, the answer to
Joyce's question can be found in his well-known publication "First American Jewish
Families", which is now searchable on the web-site of the American Jewish Archives:
http://www.americanjewisharchives.org/FAJF/intro-how.php

On the Hyams family tree:
http://www.americanjewisharchives.org/pdfs/stern_p119.pdf we can find the Hannah
HYAMS sought. She is the daughter of Henry HYAMS [b. 1793 London] and Judith
UNKNOWN, middle of the page, slightly to the right. Hannah was born in 1838 and
was married to Alexander NORDHAUS.

Since you included Charleston in the Subject line, you could contact
Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Synagogue of Charleston. They have a museum
about the Jewish community of Charleston as well as in the South
generally, and the docents are quite knowledgeable about the old
families. You can contact them at www.kkbe.org, (843) 723-1090.

The Jewish Historical Society of South Carolina (www.jhssc.org) has put many
South Carolina cemeteries on line, one of which is the KKBE Coming Street
Cemetery. There are many HYAMS listed on that index. The listing can be
found at http://jhssc.org/Charleston_KKBethElohim_ComingStreet_Cemetery.html.

Also, the book "This Happy Land The Jews of Colonial and Antebellum
Charleston" by James William Hagy has quite a few pages on HYAMS. The book
encompasses Jews who lived in Charleston >from the 17th century to 1861.

Just wanted to share that I followed up my first message to Joyce with a reminder
that JewishGen has several databases as resources - both the Family Finder and the
Family Tree of the Jewish People [FTJP].

http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/

In FTJP there were several entries. I would assume with the Family Finder she
might a few fellow HYAMS detectives.
