travel to Rotterdam around 1900 #general

My grandfather told of immigrating >from what is now Gargzdai, Lithuania by walking
across the Russian/German border to Memel, which is now Klaipeda,Lithuania, a port
on the Baltic Sea. He and others >from the same branch of the family arrived at
Ellis Island >from Rotterdam. I am wondering how they would have traveled >from
Memel to Rotterdam, by ship or by train. Does one way make more sense than the
other, perhaps in terms of cost, and is there any way I can find out? I don't
expect to find a manifest, but I would appreciate some suggestions as to how to
study travel methods.
