Dear Friends,
Andrew Zalewski, Gesher Galicia board member and author, will be
presenting GALICIAN PORTRAITS: THE STORY OF JEWS, GENTILES, AND
EMPERORS to the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami at the
Greater Miami Jewish Federation (4199 Federal Highway, Miami FL)
Sunday, March 10th at 11 A.M. Early bird visiting and sign in at 10:30
A.M.

"The talk is of interest to audiences interested in Jewish genealogy
and it is illustrated by historical pictures, unique archival
documents, and old maps. Through genealogical findings discover the
largest Jewish community in multiethnic Austri-Hungary. Andrew
Zalewski, the author of two books on Austrian Galicia (1772-1918),
explores the impact of the Habsburg rule on Galician Jews. The laws
about marriages, surnames, schools, and military service brought a
dizzying pace of changes but also controversies. Galicia's Jewish
community--pious traditionalists and impatient reformers, laborers and
professionals, dwellers of shtetls and cities--faced many choices.
Passionate arguments easily erupted about what was to be their
language (German, Hebrew, Yiddish, or Polish), customs, and loyalties.
Local Jewish cultural "rebels"wrote biting satires and poetry. But
even in difficult times, brave voices spoke loudly against prejudice."

Please join us Sunday, March 10th at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.
