There are one or two amusing articles in the yizkor book but how about =
this?
At the top of page 76 in an article about sport in Keidan I translate
"The B-team comprised Yacov Damertsky, Y. Shteinbeck,Ch. Bein and =
others(by the way the son of Chaim Bein is the astronaut Alan Bean who =
participated in the Apollo programme and was one of those that walked on =
the moon)."
By chance a few weeks after reading this the Jewish National Fund held a =
function here in Birmingham and they brought with them as an attraction =
the astro physicist Dr. Jeffrey Hoffman who had been involved in the =
space walk to repair the Hubble telescope. I got into conversation with =
him and asked if he knew Alan Bean. He told me that Alan had great =
artistic talent and had become a professional artist and Jeffrey had =
commissioned him to do a painting. I said to him " would you be =
surprised to know that Alan's father came >from the same Lithuanian =
shtetl as my parents". Surprised, he said, I would be amazed!
He then asked me to send to him at Houston a copy of the article and =
details of the publishers, which I duly did. I set out below his =
response.

I spoke today with Alan Bean. He tells me that his ancestors came >from =
Scotland. John MacBean was on the wrong side of the war against Cromwell =
and was deported to New Hampshire as an indentured servant with a term =
of 7 years. On the ship's manifest, the "Mac" was dropped >from his name, =
and the family became Bean. After 1 year,he married the daughter of the =
owner of the farm, to whom he had been indentured. So instead of being a =
servant for 7 years he ended up inheriting the farm. Alan's father was =
Arnold Bean and grew up in New Hampshire. So perhaps the article you =
sent me was, indeed, a "Purim Spiel". In any case, it provided a nice =
excuse to talk to Alan Bean and learn the story of his family. Maybe you =
can pass this information on to somebody >from the Keidan society.
I did in fact send a fact send a fax to Kibbutz Beit Zera which has the =
book in its Keidan archive. I also replied to Hoffman:
Between the years 1600-1640 Calvinists in Scotland were persecuted and a =
number of them settled in Keidan so there might yet have "been" a =
Macbean in that town.

You've cleared up a mystery. I obtained a translation of that sport =
article a few months back, and was equally intrigued about the Alan Bean =
connection. I tried for days to find some biographical material on Bean, =
but couldn't find anything that definitively traced his ancestry. I even =
asked Paula Baker, one of our Keidan members who lives Houston (her =
grandfather was B.G. Richards, the journalist and Jewish activist who =
became famous as "Keidansky") to try and contact Bean directly. Now we =
know it was an error, although it makes you wonder how the myth =
started...
By the way, if you're interested in translating more Yizkor Book =
articles, it would be of great interest to the group, I'm sure. I've =
been working with a splendid fellow in Israel, Chaim Charutz, who has =
translated a dozen or so of the pieces gratis; however, there's lots =
more to be done. We could put them up on the Keidan web site, or just =
distribute them to the group ...=20
