Question re: Immigration Ports of Entry #romania

Chuck Weinstein <cmw521@...>

The main reason many immigrants chose to arrive via Canada had to do with
price and convenience. If they arrived in Hull, they often took a train to
Liverpool or Southampton to embark to the US. If the next ship leaving was
bound for Canada, they were assured they could take a train >from the
Canadian port to the US. In my case, family members disembarked in Halifax,
took a train to Winnipeg, and then took a train to Minneapolis, on their way
to their eventual destination of North Dakota. It is not uncommon, in
looking at the St. Albans lists, to see a person who arrived at Halifax, St.
John's, or Montreal, arriving at the US border bound for NYC or Boston, or
other destinations.

Sometimes the lines offered cheaper tickets to Canada. Even with the
railroad ticket, it might be a cheaper way to get to NY or other places.

Hi Everyone,

Can anyone explain (or offer a theory) why a Romanian Jewish immigrant coming
from Europe in 1903, whose final destination was New York City or
Pittsburgh, would disembark at the port of St. John in New Brunswick,
Canada, then travel overland through Quebec and enter the United
States at St. Albans, Vermont?

What could that strange route be about? Why not go straight to Ellis
Island? Was this an issue of money, paperwork, or perhaps something
else? If it helps, the ship was the Lake Megantic, which I am
guessing sailed >from Liverpool though I am not sure.

Thank you in advance,

Hello,
My family came in 1900 and 1903 traveling that exact route >from Belarus. I am
assuming it was cheaper that way. My grandmother traveled with five children in
1903 and they came in late December which must have been still cheaper. They
were brave people.
Regards,

Ruth

For a variety of reasons, some immigrants were not permitted to enter the United
States, and they re-routed themselves to Canada, and eventually back to the
United States. Reasons would vary >from paper work to illness. In some instances,
they stayed in Canada for a year or two, prior to their eventual entry into the
United States.

I googled the ships name and found a nice article about it that probaly
explains why the ship docked in Canada as ther following sentence that I copied
for the article states:

"The Dominion Line steamship company operated liners on the Liverpool-Canada
