Need help with Jewish ancestors from Spain and/or Portugal #sephardic
bob_rubin@...
Hello,
This note is in regard to the message entitled "Need help with Jewish ancestors >from Spain and/or Portugal". I have been doing research on my MAYO / De MAYO family who lived on the Island of Rhodes for about 400 years until the early 1900s. Although I have no absolute proof, I believe that the family may have been from Navarra, Spain. Your MAY / MAI family may be spellingvariations of MAYO. One branch of my MAYO family has ancestry >from Germany prior to the mid 1500s (surname: ALAMAN / ALMANE). This family lived in Buda, Hungary, in the mid 1500s, and later, most of the family had moved to Turkey. I have a MAYO Y DNA surname project. This may be able to give you some more insights on the origin of your MAY / MAI family. For more information, you may contact me at the e-mail address below. Bob RUBIN bob_rubin@... |

Ellen Lukas Kahn asks:
The family surnames that I do have are: =A0 LUCAS & =A0MAY or MAI.Using the search engine on http://www.sephardim.com/search.shtml on Harry Stein's website www.sephardim.com, I found that the name LUCAS appeared in a book on conversos on trial in Ciudad Real, Conversos on Trial by Haim Bienart. Pere Bonnin's book Sangre Judia has a reference to LUCA in Navarra. Sangre Judia lists MAY as having lived in Zaragosa. MAIA, MAIO, and MAJO appear on sephardim.com in various locations where Sephardim fled during the Inquisition, including the Ottoman Empire and Brasil. Since the archives in various areas in Spain are in several early languages that are different >from modern Spanish, you might want to contact someone who understands medieval Spanish, Judy Simon |

My great great grandfather, Ferdinand MAY(ER), was born in Nierstein, Hessen, in 1812, son of Isaak Wilhelm MAYER, Mannheim musician, and Jentle DEL BANCO, a.k.a., Julianna HAMBURG, grandson of Abraham MAYER. Ferdinand MAYER emigrated with wife, Kettchen MAYER nee LANDAUER and 8 children, to London, UK in 1853. Our surname changed to MAY. Before the Hessen the MAYER, MAYERHOFER(all spellings), a.k.a., KREBSIG, KREPZIG, KREBSINGER, KRZEPCZYK family was in Krakow, Galizia in 17th. century. Originally this MAY(MAYER) family was probably Sephardic with the surname AL BAGEZI or AL BAGESI, before the expulsion of Jews in 1492, according to research by Eric Friedman and Pessy Hollander. My 25+ years of genealogical research are becoming more and more difficult. My father's ancestors (both paternal and maternal) originally lived in either Spain or Portugal. I have heard the oral history several times but am unable to find anything before my first ancestor went to Germany about 1685. This summer our family is planning a heritage trip to Spain and Germany. I do know where all of our ancestors were born and died in Germany but am having trouble with Spain and/or Portugal. The family surnames that I do have are: LUCAS & MAY or MAI. Can anyone put me on the right path to finding out where to search for the towns that these families may have lived in Spain?
