Searching for Syke (Shyke) Lubelski #southafrica
stephen lubell
I am repeating this call for anyone who might know of the above individual
or his descendants. His name was Syke (also spelled Shyke) LUBELSKI and was born in Leeds in England probably about 1890. It is also possible that he was called Julius or Joshua on official documents. He emigrated to South Africa sometime after 1910 or even after WWI. Family rumour has it that he changed his surname to BELL, had a son named Daniel and that he ran a furniture store. More than that I do not know except that he was probably alive in 1941. I do not know where he lived in South Africa. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. With my thanks in advance! Stephen Lubell Ma'ale Habanim 6/1 Ramat Gan 52381 Israel Email: slubell@... |

Greetings and thanks for the reply! I am not sure at all if the son's name was Daniel. I believe that I got this information >from my father and he is no longer alive, so I can't check that ... It is possible that they changed the name to Lobel, although I know none of my family (close or distant) who changed it to that. The original name was LUBELSKI or LUBELSKIE and it was either changed to Lubelle or Lubell. Is also possible that they were very assimilated and did not emphasise the fact that they were Jewish. Unfortunately no one I have contacted seems to know anything about them. I note that you are looking for various Lithuanian addresses. On both sides my ancestors came >from Lithuania. My paternal grandmother came from Darsuniskis (Darsuneshok) near Kovno and my paternal great-grandfather came was Ladzijai, (Lazdej in Yiddish) which is near the present Polish border. I have had very little luck tracing back any further than the 1850s. Regards, Stephen Lubell ----- Original Message -----

Maybe they changed to Lobel? There was a Dr. Lobel in Johannesburg.

Dear Stephen.
The name sounds so familiar to me. I believe there was a family called Lubelski who came to live in London and were relatead to an actress called Georgia Brown. I was selling Tupperware and sold some to a group of ladies ( about 38 years ago) who lived in Kensington. There was a Sheba Ross (whose husband was a big furrier in London) and the cousinof a Mrs. Ralph Att well who was a neighbour of my parents in Hendon .Her mother Mrs. Rubin was related to Mrs. Ross and to the Lubelskis' I vaguely thinkthere is soneone called Lubell in Golders Green or Hendon. I have looked up the London telephone book for you and dont know if the following is any use to you. E. Lubell, 47 Greenacres, Hendon Lane, N.3. o2o8 349 0644 E.J. Lubelsky 75 Fairholt Road N.16 0208 809 2179 G. Lubelsky 12 Elm Park Avenue N15 0208 8008647> Jan S Lubelski 61 Claremont Road, N6 0208 340 6948 T.Z. 22 Home Park Road, S.W.19 (I'm not sure if its 0207 or 0208) 946 3277 the other thing is that I can ask amongst my S. AFrican cousins and friends in N.W. London. Good Luck, Louise From: stephen lubell <slubell@...> To: South Africa SIG <safrica@...>individual or his descendants. |
