WALTS GALORE #southafrica

PROBLEM 1:
Many of the descendants of Alexander WALT of Ukmerge
(Wilkomir), lived in South Africa. As did many of the
descendants of Benjamin Leib Walt also >from Wilkomir.
Whilst I know quite a lot about Alexander's
descendants, I know little about those of Benjamin.

One of Benjamin's sons was Abraham Jacob WALT (who had
an uncle known as Jekkel) who owned a hardware store
in Claremont, Cape, South Africa. As a young man
Abraham worked for Chuck JAWITZ who was married to
Celia WALT who is a descendant of Alexander WALT. Als
Abraham had a cousin Morris WALT.

Does anyone have any information which might in some
small way help me to establish whether a relationship
exists between Alexander WALT and Benjamin Leib WALT?

PROBLEM 2: The late Dr Alexander Walt (1923-1996) was
an eminent surgeon at Wayne State University. Does
anyone have any recollections or biograhical details
about this man (a descendant of Alexander WALT, see
above)?

PROBLEM 3: 'Sonny' WALT was a medical practitioner in
South Africa. He was also descended >from Alexander
WALT. What was his real name? Does anyone have any
recollections/bigraphical details about him?

PROBLEM 4: Thee was a firm called Walt&Gorfinkel in
Cape Town, South Africa. Does anyone know who was the
Walt in this name and also can anyone tell me anything
about the activities of this firm?

PROBLEM 5: Another harware store in Claremont: M. GENN
& Co. Was this owned by Meyer GENN who was married to
Lifsha WALT?

Any help on any of the above will be gratefully
received by me, Adam Yamey, London, UK<adamandlopa@yahoo.co.uk>

Dear Adam,

Alexander WALT is related to my BERGMAN family.
Rosa BERGMAN married Harry WALT (born Wilkomer 1889, died Bloemfontein
1931).
They had three daughters: Miriam married to her cousin Sydney WALT, Elsa
married to Louis Shapiro, and Celia married to Chuckie JAWITZ.
Myriam, Elsa and Celia wrote the history of their family in 1987. Lifsha
WALT is mentioned as the daughter of Alexander WALT and Chasa PLUTZKY;
Lifsha died in Cape Town (1971).
I have a copy of the story which can be posted to you.
I have lost contact with the WALT sisters, can try to find their offspring
in Cape Town.

Await your reaction.

Sincerely,
Dennis KAHN,
Amsterdam

Jack Walt was a Newlands neighbour and colleague in the Claremont Shul
Choir for many years, He was a tenor, sharing the role with Ralph Merkel. He
loved the Shul and choir.

His daughter married a Segal and they live in Israel.

I was at school with a Louis Walt, >from Observatory but I lost contact with
him after matriculating. I believe most of the Cape Town Walts were related.

Haim pogrund

I can offer the following information:

As a youngster In the Habonim movement in the forties and
fifties, I had a very good friend, Norman Walt, who was at Oranje
for a number of years and was educated at Cape Town High School. I
think he went on to become an accountant, but I am not 100% sure. I
have not seen him since those days.
Sydney Walt, a large, rotund individual with thick lensed
spectacles was involved in Zionist and Jewish activities in the Cape
for some years, was I think related to the Walt of Walt and
Gorfinkel, a well known wholesale grocery concern in Cape Town.
"Sonny" Walt was a general practitioner in the Woodstock area of
the Cape for many years with a practice on the Main Road.I think his
first name was Isidore J.
Alec Walt as you say, became head of Surgery at Wayne State
University, Detroit after a stint at Groote Schuur Hospital in the
fifties and sixties.
I enclose an extract >from my autobiography which describes an amusing
episode during my internship in 1957 at G.S.H:

du Plessis an expert on salivary gland pathology, admitted a
middle aged woman for excision of a mixed parotid tumour. I was the
intern involved, and happened to pick up an early cancer of the
breast in this lady. I told Sannie about this, and arrangements were
made to do a radical mastectomy after a frozen section examination
that night at nine, as an emergency. 'duP'., Alec Walt, and myself
were doing the case while Efron was coping with a stab wound in a
skolly's heart in the next theatre. Suddenly, there was a scream for
help >from next door as Efron opened the pericardium and blood spurted
in all directions. This heralded the end of his coping!
'duP'. peeling off his gloves laconically, went next door to
where Efron, sweating profusely, had his finger in the hole like the
proverbial little Dutch boy, with a cursory, "Well, carry on boys,"
to us. Walt, a recently returned UCT graduate, who had been at the
Mayo Clinic doing mostly theoretical post graduate work for some
years, turned pale, looked at me, the house surgeon, in all
earnestness, and said, "What do we do next?!!" As a technically
"green" house surgeon my response was a stare and a shrug. We
carried on "piatzkering" until 'duP.'s return to complete the job a
short while later.

I hope this helps somewhat,

Haim Pogrund

The late Sydney Walt served for many years as the Chairman of the Herzlia day
school in Cape Town. If you contact the Herzlia school in Cape Town - they
have a web site, I am sure they can tell you more. In addition, one of
Sydney's sons, Harold Walt lives in Los Angeles. The Old Herzlian Alumni
group can probably give you his contact information.

Good luck,
David Landau
