digitization #yizkorbooks

One additional comment. In its announcement of the digitization of
yizkor books, the NYBC stated only that it would digitize the
original yizkor books. There was no mention of translations of
yizkor books being digitized. I think that translators are being
unnecessarily concerned about an area that was never mentioned.

Joyce:
"Original" yizkor books are protected by copyright law just as are
translations. If your announcements are to be interpreted as delivered, this
would be an infringement on copyright law. I still cannot believe that
institutions like the New York Public Library and the NYBC would simply
ignore the law. Have you gotten any word to the effect that they plan to
obtain permission >from the copyright holders before digitizing ANY titles?

And who says New Yorkers aren't friendly. Thank you Marsha for
your time to give out some good common sense information and
allaying fears.

Cheers, Pat

MODERATOR NOTE: And on that pleasant note, we will adjourn the discussion on
digitization until such time as there is more concrete information to be
had.

As a librarian in New York City (at CUNY) I suggest that no one overreact,
but that you contact NYPL to learn the details. NYPL has a very active
digitization program and is very reputable. Its librarians are well aware
of the copyright law and I would be astonished if they are not obtaining
necessary permissions. The director of the Research Library is William
Walker. His full title and address are:

William D. Walker
Senior Vice President & Mellon Director of Research Libraries
The New York Public Library
521 West 43rd Street
New York, NY 10018

I will forward some of this e-mail to him to alert him of the concern.
