The book of David Szmulenski about Auschwitz #yizkorbooks

Ada,

I live in LA. The address on Vanowen is actually in North Hollywood, not
Hollywood. It is in the San Fernando Valley. There is an Eva Dobkin with an
unlisted address in the current phone book for that area. Her number is
818-982-2254.

Good Luck, Karen Horn

The name of the person who got the
copy rights and who took care to translate it was:
Mrs Eva DOBKIN
12 223 Vanowen St. Apt A
Hollywood CA 8105?
USA

The widow never heard >from her or her heirs.

I wonder if any of you know what happened to the translation and how to
proceed >from here, regarding the English translation and publication of
the book.

Regarding this book in English, I want you to know that I spoke to Mrs. Eva
Dobkin this morning, after seeing your posting. The book in English was
published by Wayne State University Press and is called "Profiles of a Lost
World". Mrs. Dobkin told me that it has been available through Barnes and
Noble and Amazon, Also.

For what it is worth, I have just looked up Eva Dobkin in the Hollywood,
Florida, telephone book for 1999-2000. She is not listed. Deceased?

I have taken upon myself translation and publication in Hebrew of the
book "Souvenirs de la Resistance dans le Camp d' Auschwitz-Birkenau"
Mise en form par Dr. Noe Gruss, published by author, Paris 1984,
Yiddish, 352 pages.

See my web page which contains an extensive index of the names
mentioned in the book at:

While negotiating with the author's widow, Mrs. Helene Szmulewski
in Paris, I found out that the book had already been translated to
English about 10-15 years ago. The name of the person who got the
copy rights and who took care to translate it was:
Mrs Eva DOBKIN
12 223 Vanowen St. Apt A
Hollywood CA 8105?
USA

The widow never heard >from her or her heirs.

I wonder if any of you know what happened to the translation and how to
proceed >from here, regarding the English translation and publication of
the book.

I thank you very much,

I wish to thank Karen Horn, Harold Arkoff and William Fern for their
immediate incredible response to my inquiry..

It is incredible... Mostly I am quite amazed with the fact that the
author's widow never heard anything >from Eva Dobkin in all those years.
It is also strange that the book was published in America, and widow is
not informed and also doesn't get a copy.

I shall see now about copy rights and how to post the whole translation
in JewishGen Yizkor books' database.

I thank you all very much. This Email Exchange Group is just AMAZING!

Shalom,

Ada Holtzman

I have a short while ago received the the Jewish Studies 200-2001
catalog >from the Wayne State University Press. Here is the bibliographical
information indicated in the above catalog about the book which has
the title : "Profiles of a lost world. Memoirs of Eastern Europe Jewish
life before World War II, [author] Hirsz Abromowicz; translated by Eva
Zeitlin Dobkin; edited by Dina Abromowicz and Jeffrey Shandler;
introduction by David E. Fishman and Dina Abromowicz.Published in 1999;
448 pages, 20 illustration, Cloth (edition) $39.95 ISBN 0-8143-2784-2

Published in cooperation with the YIVO institute for Jewish Research and
with the assistance of the Lucius N. Littauer Foundation

This book is published in the "Raphael Patai Series in Jewish Folklore and
Anthropology"

Question: Is this the same book that Mrs Holtzman wishes to translate? The
author does not seem to be the same and judged by the title the subject
neither. But it needs closer verification. By the way, you can also look
up the forementioned catalog at: http://wsupress.wayne.edu where it can be
purchased directly.

I wish to thank George Neuwirth for his answer. We probably shall find out
once I see the book. I already ordered...

By the way, Szmulewski mentions and writes about many French Jews who were
with him in the Auschwitz Camp and partcipated in the Resistance movement.
We might translate the book to French also.

The full translated index is at my web page:
