Rules & Guidelins - please comment

The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. 

A Few Simple Rules & Guidelines
  • Topics: Posts should relate to Jewish genealogy. We do not discuss religious issues (such as "Who is a Jew" and other discussions which are frequently raised within the context of researching one's roots).
  • Moderation: This group is moderated to ensure civility, and that posts are related to Jewish genealogy.
  • Frequency: You may post unique messages as often as you like, but please try to be thoughtful in your posts, and do not abuse this approach by posting many messages the same day, etc.
  • Commercial Posts: We welcome everyone, including other non-profit organizations, to share commercial offers as long as they are related to Jewish genealogy, and that those posting them do not abuse the privilege. Commercial posts should not repeat more than once every three months.
  • Fundraising Posts: Please do not post fundraising requests for other organizations.
  • Images: You may include images, and text from other languages (that you need help translating, etc).

Question about Images: if we're encouraging people to post text for translating, doesn't that undermine ViewMate, which is set up specifically for that?

Avrami — I suggest adding the current rule that a signature block should be included at the end of every post with the sender’s full name and location (city and country). 

Perhaps also add a link to the Discussion Group page for those who want more information (we’ll need to revise this page somewhat).
How will the ability to post images impact ViewMate, one of our very popular resources?

I choose Full Featured DigestGroup up to 12 messages together as one email instead of being sent individually (rich formatting). But is this also once a day? Like it use to be?

We have to see how it will go. ViewMate was a solution, in part,  when we could not do this. We have seen on the Facebook group that people being able to quickly post images is helpful, and this will allow that to happen.

I don’t check the Facebook group so I don’t know how successful it is. But as a platform, I find Facebook hard to search for information, not users.

On ViewMate, I can search for my family surnames and ancestral towns, and, if I’m a translator, for posts by language. I don’t think that functionality exists on Facebook.

Maybe we should poll JewishGen users to find out if they use the Facebook group, if they get value from it, if they prefer it over ViewMate, etc.

Avrami,  how about writing a message into another language?  Spanish, Hebrew, Russian, etc.  It is not clear if this is OK to do,  but on Facebook people can do that and use google translate if needed.

Avraham,

Since you asked us to comment, I'm commenting. I gather this will eventually replace the old EML? For now, does this mean we'll get both? I get the old EML as a daily digest, so I set this up the same. I'll see how it comes on.

Also, since a comment was made about the Facebook group, I'd like to say something about that. I LOVE FB groups! Now that I'm retired, most of what I use FB for groups. And family (close and extended DNA /family tree cousins). And I would use the GJ FB group in a heartbeat.

However, after making one post in the JG group, and a friend of mine who is NOT in the group commented to me about my post, I realized the group is public. As long as it remains public, where anyone can see our posts, I won't use it again. If it were to be changed to at least Closed, I'd use it in a heartbeat.
