Finding a Genealogist
Dan Oren
I "do" my own genealogy and have many friends in our genealogy world, but have a friend who does NOT want to do the work herself and is looking to hire a genealogist specializing in American and Eastern European Jewish roots. Can any of you personally recommend someone available for hire and let me know how they charge for their services. Please reply privately.
Thank you, Dan Oren Woodbridge, Connecticut USA |

If you go to the JewishGen.org website there are 2 info files. One on finding a genealogy researcher and one on hiring a researcher.

How does one get to be listed as a genealogist? |

I think you meant ancestry.com . I am a lousy typist and have to constantly correct what I type. Also, be sure to double check names you type… I think you meant Janette Silverman, not Jeannette. Also, I think you meant the IAJGS (International Association of Jewish Genealogy Societies). But Ancestry’s NOT the place to look for her. She’s not dead, so unless one is looking for someone she’s researching….. and can pull up a tree she has posted, he would not find her. Even if he went to “All Directories & Member Lists results for Jeanette Silverman,” there are over 1500 possibles. Much better to check the Discussion group’s archives, and see if she posted — and if so, get her email address that way. Another option would be to go Facebook, and check if she’s a member of one of the Jewish Genealogy groups there (Jewish Genealogy Portal, Tracing the Tribe, etc. Also, one should always include the relevant portion of the email being responded to. Hope this helps, Barbara Mannlein Tucson, AZ

Janette Silverman
Thanks Barbara,
Actually I can be found at the "Hire an Expert" tab on Ancestry.com - I head up a team specializing in Eastern European and Jewish research at AncestryProGenealogists. I can also be contacted directly at jsilverman@... I am a member of the Facebook groups mentioned and the APG. Janette Silverman |

Janette Silverman works for Ancestry, which is why one would look for her there. Not in the documents, but in the staff listing.

Yes, but the poster did not have your correct name, or correct url. Also he did not say that you worked for Ancestry.
The post should have suggested that one go to Ancestry, Select "Help" from the tool bar, scroll down to "Hire an Expert”, then select “Our Experts”, etc…

There are a number of professional genealogists who regularly speak at IAJGS, and at other conferences.
Many professional genealogists, Jewish or not, will have a listing at the Association of Professional Genealogists, APGEN.org. There are also some pages there that give you information on what to look for when hiring a professional. Those who have become certified (think board certification, like a doctor), can be found listed at https://bcgcertification.org. Another good place to ask is your local Jewish Genealogy Society (JGS) Renee Carl Washington, DC |
