I'm not sure about the name pronounced Neta meaning seedling although it does sound like a more recent convention. There is a similar name Nota (נטע ) for ashkenazi men that often accompanies the name Nosson or Nathan. I think it is more of a nickname for נתן and isn't really connected to planting despite the spelling. The author of the kabbalistic work מגלה עמוקות was Rabbi Nosson Nota Shapiro of Krakow born 1584, and the name was used even earlier than that. Hope this helps. Shabbat shalom, Binyamin Kerman

I have no idea how long - but in my husband's family it was Nekha which became Netta in UK and Nita in South Africa for the granddaughters - origin 1870s Lithuania.. No male equivalents that I remember in my data entry files but that is not set in concrete.......

Hello, I'd be very grateful for some help. I'm trying to discover how long the name given name "Neta" (נֶטַע, plant/seedling) has been in use, both for men and women. In the course of my research on JewishGen, I've come across the name "Neta" being used several times, in records from the early 20th century and before, for both men and women. Can anyone tell me if this name I've found in the records is the Hebrew name נֶטַע? Or is it a different name? The reason I ask is because I read once that the name "Neta" (נֶטַע) dated from the 1960s onwards. I'd appreciate tremendously any help anyone can give me. Thank you so much for your time!
