Aleph Yud - what does it mean?
AmielM@...
Good day. In the 1932 census in Tzfat, my great-grandmother's country of birth and nationality is described in Hebrew letters as "Aleph Yud". Could someone shed a light as to what it means? I guess it's an acronym, but I cannot find its meaning.
Thank you, Amiel Moskona

Taken out of context it is difficult to be certain but Alef-Yud can stand for "Or Yehuda" Or Yashar Eilat "Eino Yehudi" = is not a Jew Eino Yachol = is unable Eretz Yisrael to name but a few David Lewin London

Amiel, shalom and shavua tov, Whenever you and all our genders find this kind of "mystery", it can easily be solved here: http://www.kizur.co.il/home.php This is a site that gives the meaning of RASHEI TEVOT. The most common meaning of א"י is Eretz Israel (ארץ ישראל), but there are other ones, as you can see here: http://www.kizur.co.il/search_word.php?abbr=%D7%90%D7%99&searchby=abbr&m=1 I hope this helps! All the best, Judite Orensztajn, Jerusalem

In Ivrit we always have the " to show that the letters are an
abbreviation - usually before the last letter of a string. It does
not aid the meaning.

Show me the original Hebrew document, maybe there are some more clues? David

Thank you. I didn’t mention (sorry) that it’s written: aleph “ yud. Maybe that provides a better clue?

Good Morning,
I would think it means "Eretz Israel" in Hebrew: ארץ ישראל Regards, Susan

Unless you know otherwise, I think it is most likely to stand for Eretz Yisrael, meaning born in the land of Israel.

It may mean “eino yadua” = “not known”

In the UK, “AY” refers to “Adath Yisroel” – arguably the frummest ‘sect’ of
Judaism.

If it's referring to origin/nationality, the most likely answer is Eretz Yisroel, meaning land of Israel. That abbreviation has a long history, and is still used today, like U.K. for United Kingdom.

We would have to see the document. If it was issued by the Palestine Mandate government, then like the money of the time, it may mean Eretz Yisroel. Many Jews saw the area as Land of Israel, and aleph-yod was added to show that. You can see examples of notes and coins at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestine_pound#/media/File:PSE-2m.jpg Dani

Adat is written with an Ayn, not an Alef.

You are all right in that you have to know what the original document is about. In this case, it is a list of residents in Safed, and it refers to Eretz Israel

If the acronym was in the census, it stands for Eretz Yisrael, or Land of Israel. During the British Mandate (1917 -1948), Jews were allowed to refer to Palestine as Eretz Yisrael. 1932 would fall into that period. Hope this helps, Debbie Lifschitz Jerusalem
