Visas
Errol Schneegurt
my father came in 1927 and was required to go to the US Embassy in Lviv to apply and get a Visa to come to America.
When did the requirement for Visas begin?
Does the Government retain the files of applications and interview notes?
Which branch of Government would retain these documents?

Visas were required for entry to the US beginning in 1924, you could obtain them earlier (my grandparents did, in 1922) but the law requiring them began in 1924. Visas from 1924-1944 are held by USCIS and copies can be obtained from them: Visa Files, July 1, 1924 - March 31, 1944 Mark Jacobson Past President, JGSPBCI Gesher Galicia Board member JRI-Poland Town Leader Boryslaw and Drohobycz Boca Raton, FL

In Re: Your Visa History Question
Hi,
US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on their website has a section that deals solely with genealogy related questions on visas and related historical information on the US immigration system. The main USCIS website is found at https://www.uscis.gov/ Go to the section marked tools at top of page and search those research topics having to do with family immigration history.
I hope this is responsive to your question.
Best, Chuck

Errol asked "Does the Government retain the files of applications and interview notes?
Which branch of Government would retain these documents?" As noted by others, the approved visa applications and supporting documents in 1927 were filed in the USCIS Visa Files, 1924-1944, available today via USCIS. But you asked if it would include "interview notes," and that is an important distinction. The USCIS Visa Files contain a copy of the application form with all required supporting documents (birth certificate, marriage certificate, military service records, etc.). Other than information entered onto the application form by State Department officials regarding other documents seen, there is nothing in the USCIS Visa Files resembling "interview notes." The State Department does not appear to have kept their copies of the visa applications or related notes. US Consular records occasionally contain logs or registers referencing visa applicants, but not actual files. However, State Department "visa files" correspondence at the National Archives in College Park, MD, does include discussion of certain complicated cases. Marian |
