Stettin is a big city in the north of Poland today
(Prussia or Germany in the 1800's). It probably was
also the name of a ship. If the ship is on the
Hamburg Passenger List, it left Hamburg on that date.
If it is indirect, then the passengers left the ship
in Britain and got on another after crossing Britain.
They would have arrived in NYC weeks or months or
years later-depending on whether they stayed in
Britain for a while.
If you looked at an Index to the Hamburg Indirect,
then the page number is the page of the actual
passenger list which you can get >from the LDS FHL. If
the index gives you a town of origin (Grief
presumably), then he came >from that town to Hamburg
and got on the ship at Hamburg-it is, after all, the
Hamburg Emigration List-when the people left Hamburg.

which might give you more information.
