JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Can name changes occur because of double transliteration? #general

My great great grandfather's name is given as Nahum Ber SILBERG on all
documents written in the US...children's marriage and death certificates
and tombstones, etc. He never came to the US. We now have two documents
written in Russia...and in russian. His name is given as Chaim Ber on both.
Could the difference in names be due to the double transliteration...hebrew
(or yiddish) to russian to english? Any other ideas?
