JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen re: Letter Y in Polish #general

Hi all! There are many Ys in Polish - syn=son, rynek=market,
trzy=three, cztery=four, etc...and of particular relevance to mid 19th
century Polish certificates relating to Jewish people, the
word 'Starozakonny' which I believe means 'Jew', but has been
translated for me (in a birth certificate dated 1831)as 'Old Monastic'
by a non Jewish Polish friend! A somewhat distiguished title. However,
it may actually have a more accurate translation, and if there is
anyone who can correct the above, I'd be grateful.
Good wishes and have fun with the language!
