Shirley Amcis Portnoy asked: Can anyone tell me what the Hebrew equivalent
of the name Osias is and what is the meaning of the female name Machla?

The JewishGen 'given names data base' (GNDB) is a brilliant tool for cross
referencing formally recorded given names and Jewish given names. It can be
found at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/GivenNames/search.htm .

The GNDB identifies that Osias is in fact Hosheya in Hebrew. My own research
into the name Machla (it was also my paternal grandmother's name) is that it
is a Hebrew name and probably comes >from the Hebrew root word for
forgiveness and is also related to the Hebrew word for dance.
