Alex Krakovsky Ukraine postings - Alphabetical Listing of Surnames #ukraine

Gary Pokrassa

Many archive wiki pages posted by Alex Krakovsky also have an entry that looks something like this:

An alphabetical index of Jewish names. Written by Boris Finkelstein.

It may appear above the main file listings or in the upper right corner as a separate box

Apparently Boris has created a list for many revision lists of the family surnames included in the attached revision list which is downloadable in a pdf file.

It is NOT an index (since it does not have references to actual record numbers) but it is a helpful clue that tells you whether or not a particular surname of interest in included in that revision list

It is published in Cyrillic.  However this can easily be translated into English using the Steve Morse webpage at this url:  https://stevemorse.org/russian/r2ebatch.html

I have been informed that unfortunately there is currently no place to upload this type of list into the main JG database and that the appropriate place is on a Kehilalink.

Hi Gary,

Boris is a professional researcher in Kiev. He created these surname lists for the Jewish Roots Forum, a Jewish Russian language genealogy message board. They are very useful, especially when searching uncommon surnames, to narrow down search towns.

Beware that some of these name lists are far from being complete.
There are more comprehensive lists that exist for towns of Radomysl uezd: census of 1815-1816, 1834, 1834 supplemental, 1850, 1850 supplemental (last name, social class, page number, index number), as well as 1808 census of drinking establishment ownership (complete census information). 1818 Supplemental census is in the works.

Currently, a complete list of 1897 census Radomysl uezd is being worked on. It will include town/village, last name, and page number of all towns and villages.  According to Wikipedia, 1897 census numbers Jewish population at 41272.

Radomysl uezd includes the following towns:
Brusilov
Gornostaypol
Ivankov
Korostyshev
Malin
Radomysl
Rozhev
Khabnoe
Chernobyl

1897 Radomysl uezd census also includes rural areas, which are currently not indexed anywhere in public domain.  This information is in progress of being uploaded by Alex and is being transcribed at the same time.

Gary, you wrote that these lists cannot be made available in JG database and can be uploaded to Kehlialink.  Is there one available for Radomysl uezd?

Regards,
Mike

There are literally several thousand files posted by Alex Krakovsky.  Many do have such links but it is not possible nor practical to do what you are asking.  We have our hands full just keeping up with the actual records being posted by Alex K. The best way for any researcher to proceed is to first locate a file in the Alex K wiki files which is of interest.  That is why I described how to find such a link on the wiki page

Gary,

I’m not just aware about Alex’s site, but I searched numerous files, sometimes successfully, sometime not. But I never run into those lists of names. They would be very helpful and saving a ton of time…
