Hello
Can anyone recommend a genealogy program that is vertical and simple to use? I stopped researching years ago after entering 600 names when my upgraded program became too complicated, but I would like to start researching again. Thank you. Estelle Guttman #7805 Reston Va |

My personal opinion is Brother's Keeper. I have been using this since 1990's and it has 2 major good features. 1) I can document with photos, documents (pdf, doc, txt and any other, but may not open from within the program). 2) It is not Internet based and I do not need internet access and no information is on the internet. I do not have permission from everyone to upload their information, and i do not think any site is hack-proof. 3) Quick support considering the original developer responds. BK is usable out-of-the-box and can be downloaded for free for trials. I can de-link people so if a person has a marriage annulled or divorces, the spouse and all their relatives are de-linked. The only problem I came on was each person needs (or needed) to be binary, Male or Female. Since I do not always know by the name, I need a way to flag these entries for further investigation. There are many reports, but I like to export to a different program and produce 50 foot wide family tree charts, but the reports there are limited. Dani When you start to read readin, how do you know the fellow that wrote the readin, wrote the readin right? I like Legacy family tree. I am not sure what you mean by vertical, but you can view pedigree charts and descendants charts easily, and the children go under the parents when you enter the data. Also there is a Facebook Legacy users group, that can answer your questions quickly. If you have a problem you usually can get an answer as to how to do something within a few minutes. It does have a lot of "bells and whistles" but you can start with a free download of the program from Legacyfamilytree.com. As you get more comfortable and want to do more, then you can if you wish, get the deluxe version for a relatively small price, and your data remains, you just unlock some of the more advanced features. There is one negative - it has a christened/baptised field in the individual input screen that as of now, can't be hidden. You can customize the family view screen, so you don't see it. I don't use it, but would very much prefer that it were not there. That said, I have been using this program for my husband's family for many years and find it so much better than other programs that I decided if I could ignore it for his non-Jewish family, I could ignore it for my Jewish one.

I've used Reunion for over a decade. It has pretty much everything I need.
Upgrades are not free, so I looked around for alternatives. I tried a couple of other programs, but I realized that I'm pretty happy with what Reunion gives me. Keep in mind that certain versions of software may not run on your computer's operating system. Check the specifications carefully. (Example: Reunion 12 does not run on my mac, which is using OS 10.12) Understand that once you're invested in a program, you're probably going to stick with it. Here are some websites that review the different programs: https://genealogytools.com/the-family-tree-software-alternatives-series/ https://familyhistorydaily.com/genealogy-help-and-how-to/best-family-tree-software/ https://hobbyhelp.com/genealogy/best-genealogy-software/ Good luck with your search, Laurie Sosna San Francisco, CA |

My vote also definitely goes to Brother's Keeper
First of all, not having your family tree right there on your computer, whether-or-not it's also online too, is very risky. Additionally, it's much easier to navigate through one's tree, print reports to share and flexibly keep detailed information for each person. Moreover, besides being available interchangeably in dozens of languages, Brother's Keeper - since several decades - has been updated every couple of months or so, adding new features, reports, graphic presentations, 'bells and whistles', etc. Kind regards, Alan Ehrlich Switzerland |

Just want to react to Dani's remark that Brother's Keeper, in addition to genders: "Male" and "Female"... does indeed also have the third choice: "Unknown".
