searching for information on family of Jake (Yankel) MUSHKAT

Jake (Yankel) MUSHKAT married my grandmother Anna (Chane) (PASSIN) SLONIMSKY on July 2, 1923, in NYC, six years after my grandfather died.  According to his naturalization papers, his DOB is May 13, 1871, and he was born in Vilna, Russia, which is possibly the birth place of my grandmother as well.  Anna died on Jan. 30, 1927, leaving behind my father, age 9, and his two older brothers.

I am particularly interested in why Mr. Mushkat appears to have abandoned the children at that time, but any information would be appreciated.  My father was then raised by various aunts and uncles. Any information on my grandmother is also appreciated.  I learned of this marriage when I was trying to find my grandparents' marriage papers in NYC.  My father had never mentioned having a stepfather before that and had little to say about the man, other than that Mr. Mushkat sometimes took Dad to shul.

My great great grandmother was Cyza Malka Muskatenblit (shortens to Muskat) who was born in Rajgrod in Lomza Gubernia in NE Poland (on borders with Lithuania). She married Leib Guttenberg of Rajgrod and their son Aaron Berko Guttenberg (my great grandfather) came to Hull, England in c 1865 with his wife and baby daughter to escape the Tsar's draft.

Thank you to those who wrote me publicly and privately, especially Johanna Becker who researched Mr. Mushkat for me.

Many wrote me to suggest possible reasons he left my father and avenues of research.  These pretty much followed the lines that I had already assumed.  I am grateful for the time each of you spent considering the situation.
