Need your help identifying Family Member's Country of Origin - #general

Hi,

I have also been told that Morris is most likely Moshe by a family member.  It is said my father Morris Sherman is named after his Grandfather Morris (Moshe).  In Solomon's marriage registry, he lists parent's Morris Sherman and Ida Hoffman.

I think you are correct.

Solomon Sherman had a brother Sam Sherman.  Sam had a son Victor Sherman, Benjamin Sherman, Daughter Chava Sherman, Daugher Riva Sherman, and a couple other children I believe.

Through DNA, we just located one of the Sherman Relatives.  The son of Riva Sherman (Kim Sherman) was born in Lviv, Ukraine. According to him, Sam Sherman left with his son Victor, and everyone else was left behind. They were unable to get proper papers to leave.  He said Sam Sherman was born Vilednik.

Kim Sherman saidd that the "Wallednik" on Solomon Sherman's Registration Card we see appears to be Vilednik, which sounds like "Wallednik"

Can you "save your search" on Jewish Gen.  Unless search is saved, links from JewishGen don't work. You must first save, then take the link from the Saved Search.  Please do so!  Id love to see the documents you found.

At the time Solomon Sherman married Sophia Carp (Krupnik), Solomon Sherman listed his parents as Ida Hoffman and Morris Sherman.  Of course, we cannot confirm this and must Solomon Sherman's word at face value.

Solomon had a brother Sam Sherman.  One of Sam's daughters was Riva.  Through DNA, we just located Riva's son.  The son Kim Sherman was born in Lviv Ukraine and said Sam Sherman was from Vilednik, Ukraine.

While we cannot read the document, Kim Sherman stated: "Wallednik" we see in this attachment is Vilednik, which sounds like "Wallednik".

Ok. Definitely not right person. Thanks.

So two candidate towns, both in Volhynia:

Novi Velednyky:
Alternate names: Novi Velednyky [Ukr], Veledniki [Rus], Vlednik [Yid], Novyye Veledniki [Rus], Wieledniki [Pol], Weledniki, Vladnik

and
Volodarsk-Volynskiy
Alternate names: Volodarsk-Volynskiy [Rus], Volodarsk, Kotozovo [Rus, 1912+], Kutuzov-Volodarsk, Goroshki [Rus, before 1912], Horoshki [Yid], Horoszki [Pol]

At first Volodarsk looks best from the illegible towns on the early documents, but Louis' naturalization says he's from "Velidnik" (typed).

Looking at the Yiddish and the older pronunciations, I think Novi Velednyky is more likely.

Solomon and his nephew Louis are from Novi Velednyky, Ukraine. Following is how I got there (the fact that they have a very specific and not terribly common trade, shoemaker, makes it much easier to follow them and know you have the right people):

The 1920 census shows Solomon was born in "Wolin" , ie: the Volhynia region in present day Ukraine.  Here's a link to a page with info and links in JG:

WW1 draft reg for "nephew" Louis, has a bit more on hometown:

Louis' naturalization:

Believe this is their hometown,Novi Velednyky, Ukraine

I'm sure there's more to find; manifests to Canada and entrance into US, etc but I'm reasonably certain this is the answer to your initial question of "where did he come from".
"Morris" is likely Moshe or similar, and there are no rules, but there's a good chance "Ida" is Chaie (Chaya or a variant)

The 1920 census has "Wolin" crossed out and Russia written in.  Wolin is likely the Volhynia region of the Ukraine.  Within the region is the town Volodarsk-Volynskiy.  "Volodarsk" is similar phonetically to "Walladuk which appears on Solomon Sherman's WWI draft registration card.  His WWI draft registration card has "Wielladuk" best I can determine from the handwriting.
I would also note that his WWI draft registration card has that he has his first paper "Pa" on the 1920 census.  If possible to find his naturalization papers, they may give more information regarding the town and should have more detail on the ship and date of arrival.

More folks would be inclined to help if you supplied the link to the original document, rather than “high resoultion” links (which are just pictures).

Links to the original enable us to enlarge the images w/o decreasing clarity.

Link 1 Photo is marriage license.  His name was Solomon Sherman and he married Sophie Carp (originally Krupnik) in 1916.  Solomon lists his parents as Morris Sherman and Ida Hoffman.  I am told his Morris might have been called (Moshe or similar spelling).  I see on Ancestry that Sherman has several variations (Szerman, Sherman, etc)

Link 2 Photo is Solomon Sherman's registration card.  The city where he was born appears to not exist or be illegible aside from Russia.  This is where I need your help!  Where was Solomon Sherman Born? Link High Resolution Registration Card

The 1920 Census lists Solomon Sherman arriving in the USA in 1913 and Russian.  Profession Shoe Maker.  Below are "Speculative" Documents I found at Ellis Island Website that May or May Not be him!  Have yet to find documents corroborating the Parents of this Solomon Sherman.

The town name Walladuk is probably misread. The first capital letter may be M (like in the handwritten Shoe Maker, May 25, Married,....).
The closest match I found is Malachovka (could d be ch?). One place is in Ukraine(near Kiev), another one near Moscow.
The Ellis Island manifest may not be the right one. Solomon's profession in this manifest is "tailor", not shoe maker.

There is no "W" in Cyrillic.  I would suggest checking Polish, Lithuanian, or Latvian sources.

About Link 2: I checked a few Russian genealogy sites… Could not find any location that would remotely resemble “Walls…” (with a different variation of the spelling for the second part of the word). Maybe the location in one of the Soviet Republics? At the time of the Soviet Union people tend to write Russia as a location, rather then refer to the actual republic name…

As to Link 1, it is very hard to read…
Sorry...
