The Name Jur #names
Daniel Mann
Is anyone familiar with the name Jur (or Jure or Jura)?
Is this a Polish named that was used in Galicia, or perhaps it had a Jewish origin?
In particular I am wondering if it was a form of Yair (יאיר) or perhaps it was short for Yeruchim (ירוחם) as in Yeruchim Fishel?
Any insights or experience with this would be appreciated.
Thank you.

This is Hebrew
OR = Light [ Root is Aleph Vav Reish ]
Ori = Uri = "My Light"
Yair = future tense = will light
Yerucham comes from a different root namely Reish Chet Mem, meaning compassion or feel sorry for... as in Ra'cha'mim.

Margalit Ashira Ir
Hello Daniel,
My family is from Biala Podlaska, Poland. My father is Samuel IR, in polish it is written as JR , My aunt used JUR, she is long gone. My cousins in Israel use JUR (yud, vov, reish). As you can see, I and my siblings use IR. An interesting family.
Alexander Beider lists IR as a surname from the city of Shavli (Šiauliai), Lithuania. I don't have more information than that. But since you asked, I am wondering what is your relationship to the JUR family, would you like to connect privately?
