NYPL opens up some databases for remote use for library card holders
Bob Kosovsky
During the period that all NYPL branches and research centers are closed,
NYPL has arranged for some databases that are normally only available within the buildings to be accessible remotely with your library card/pin. The titles shown below can be accessed from the databases page https://www.nypl.org/collections/articles-databases or from the links below: Academic Search Premier (EBSCO) * https://www.nypl.org/…/articles-dat…/academic-search-premier Ancestry * https://www.nypl.org/…/articles-da…/ancestry-library-edition Business Source Complete * https://www.nypl.org/…/articl…/business-source-premier-ebsco Credo Reference * https://www.nypl.org/col…/articles-databases/credo-reference Gale Virtual Reference Library * https://www.nypl.org/…/artic…/gale-virtual-reference-library JSTOR * https://www-jstor-org.i.ezproxy.nypl.org/ The New York Times 1980-present * https://www.nypl.org/…/articles…/new-york-times-1980-present The New York Times, 1851-2016 * https://www.nypl.org/…/proquest-historical-newspapers-new-y… Newspapers.com * https://www.nypl.org/node/496043 Oxford Reference Online * https://www.nypl.org/…/articles-dat…/oxford-reference-online ProQuest Research Library * https://www.nypl.org/…/articles-d…/proquest-research-library Readex Databases, including America’s Historical Newspapers * https://www.nypl.org/collections/articles-databases/alpha%3D%26subject%3D0%26location%3D0%26audience%3D0%26language%3D0%26keyword%3Dreadex%26limit%3D0 Wall Street Journal, 1889-present * https://www.nypl.org/…/a…/wall-street-journal-1984-present-0 Bob Kosovsky New York City

Thank you Bob! I am passing this along to my members. I have been compiling a list of free genealogy things to do while we are all socially isolating ourselves, and posting them to our Facebook page.

Too bad that if you have a library card outside of NY this won’t work ! If you live outside of NYC it says you can get a temporary card, but it has to be picked up in person.

Anyone who lives, works, attends school or pays property tax in New
York State is entitled to a NYPL card. For a list of the NYPL databases that can normally be searched from home, see https://www.nypl.org/collections/articles-databases . Among them, ProQuest's Historical Jewish Newspapers and these other newspapers: Atlanta Constitution, Baltimore Sun, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Hartford Courant, Los Angeles Times, Toronto Star, Washington Post. For details and a link to an online application, see https://www.nypl.org/help/library-card/terms-conditions#access. Out-of-staters and visitors from abroad can apply in person for a three-month card. Ordinarily it is possible for NYers who live outside the city to apply online and fax/email a copy of ID, but I guess that won't work when the library is closed. Check your local library for temporary remote access to Ancestry.com, etc. The link to Ancestry on my neighborhood library’s website still says “this resource is only available through library computers for in-library use and cannot be accessed from home.” Even so, I clicked through and gained full access to the library’s Ancestry account. What a great resource for these times! I have an older NYPL card. Is there an expiration on these cards? Mine doesn't show one.

You need to do the application in person and you get the card immediately at a NYPL lending library. Perhaps the in-person requirement has changed, but you do need to be a New York State resident for a non-temporary card. There is an expiration date after 3 years. Barbara Sloan, To renew, I followed the directions given on the website - I scanned the card and my driver's license and sent it to the place stated. Did that over a year ago, so I do not remember all except that it was quite easy. As a SC resident, not sure, but you can call them and discuss!

FWIW, these cards do expire. As I am now outside of the state, I guess I'm out of luck.
