Hello everyone ! Hope this finds all safe and well during this stressful time. I have a letter that was found in my mom’s possessions after she passed a number of years ago, but I now have the time to start my research. My maternal grandfather was born in Konigsberg as Max ( maybe Maximillian ) Aronovsky on either October 1,1876 ( this was date on his Declaration of Intention paper)or on July 15,1877 which it states on his on his WW 11 Draft Registration Card ! Why the two different dates I’ll never understand. He changed his last name to Arnold when he entered the US in Niagara Falls on June 12,1907 with my Grandmother Ida, after emigrating from Montreal. The the letter from my mom’s cousin states that HER grandfather's first name was Dovid,and he had a “business” that he inherited that use to take groceries in large horse drawn carts from Korno ( Kaunas,Lithuania) to Konigsberg. |

Hi Marilyn,
Konigsberg (today called Kaliningrad) has a seaport that does not ice over in winter. So, the story of Dovid bringing groceries from Kovno to Konigsberg makes sense, if they were goods being shipped out.

You may want to research what records exist for Kaliningrad, and see if you can find anything on Max or Dovid.
Also, did Dovid stay there, or did he emigrate? For instance, if he came to the U.S. you can search for naturalization, passenger manifest, and other records which may lead you to an answer.

I know nothing about Dovid, who would be my great grandfather other than he had a grocery business and took goods to Konigsberg by horse drawn cart. I will check to see if that name, or of his son Max, my grandfather, were living in Kaliningrad. I’ve been told that Max could’ve been Moshe or Mordechai so I’ll look into those names as well ! Here is an example of a reply that would be better addressed to the sender of the question (rather than to the group):
"You can also try Lithuania, where Kaunas/Kovno is.” I, a reader, do not know what the question was. Maybe I don’t care, but maybe—given that I have ancestry from near Kovno—this answer might be useful to me IF I knew what the question was! May I suggest that it would be useful, when submitting a reply like that, for the writer either to address the sender privately OR to include the original question?
