Upcoming free access to the Archives of St. Petersburg, Russia

Joel Ratner

The Archives of St. Petersburg, Russia will be closed starting March 23, 2020 per the notice below. From that time until April 5, remote access to scanned images will be without charge. If you are looking for a metrical register from either the Choral Synagogue (TsGIA Fond 422 Opis 3) or the Kronstadt Synagogue (TsGIA Fond 1129 Opis 1), scanned images will be available for no charge. This information was gleaned from the Facebook page of the SPB Archives. The URLs are as follows:

SPB Choral Synagogue metrical registers (1856 - 1918)  at: https://spbarchives.ru/infres/-/archive/cgia/422/3?_archivestore_WAR_archivestoreportlet_onlyWithImages=true

Also under the Choral Synagogue records are burial registers for various SPB cemeteries. These are under Fond 422 Opis 1 at  https://tinyurl.com/F422-Opis1

Kronstadt Synagogue metrical registers Fond 1129 Opis 1 at: https://spbarchives.ru/infres/-/archive/cgia/1129/1

Use of Google Chrome is helpful for purposes of translating the webpages into English.

Note from the SPB Archives on Facebook:

ABOUT TEMPORARY CLOSING OF READING HALLS

AND FREE REMOTE ACCESS

From March 23, 2020, reading rooms of the archives of St. Petersburg are closed for 2 weeks:

 TsGA SPb (St. Antonova-Ovseenko, 1)
TsGIA SPb (Pskov St., 18; lane Pirogova, 5)
 TSGAIPD SPb (Tavricheskaya St., 39)
TSGALI St. Petersburg (Shpalernaya St., 34)
TSGANTD St. Petersburg (Tambovskaya St., 17a)
TSGAKFFD St. Petersburg (Tavricheskaya St., 39)

The decision to close was made on the basis of a resolution of the Government of St. Petersburg dated 03.13.2020 “On measures to counteract the spread of a new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in St. Petersburg” and recommendations of the Rosarchive.

Until the end of this week, we advise you, if possible, to refrain from visiting reading rooms. In a pandemic, it is very important to reduce the number of social contacts of each person as soon as possible.

Starting March 18, ordering of cases will be impossible. Moreover, already ordered cases will be waiting for you in the reading rooms after quarantine.

 BONUS:
Realizing the dismay of our researchers with this news, we announce that from March 23 to April 5, remote access to documents posted on the Archives of St. Petersburg portal will be free.

The metrical records are held in Fonds 422 and I think 1129. Don't forget to use Google Chrome to translate.

Nancy,

The URL of the archives is spbarchives.ru. I did look at the vital records. There is no name index that I could see anywhere, so, even if you know the name and a year, you would have to go through the entire register, one page at a time. The quality of the web images is barely adequate to read.

Oh yes, one must register in order to gain access to these records.

Regards,

Boris
